Police detained more than a dozen individuals and managed to block the crowd from entering the Sejm, the Polish parliament building. The officers emphasized that they were neutral in the conflict, warning against actions that compromise their safety.
MichaĆ KoĆodziejczak, the deputy agriculture minister, suggested that the disturbance was not caused by genuine farmers but by instigators, although he didn’t specify who they might be.
The demonstration saw farmers using tractors to block roads into the city and gathering in significant numbers in front of the prime minister’s office, eventually moving towards parliament. Some protesters showed their dissatisfaction by stepping on an EU flag and setting ablaze a symbolic coffin labeled “farmer.”
Support from various groups, including miners and hunters, added to the crowd’s strength. Despite police cautions, the protest was marked by loud noises from horns, firecrackers, and smoke bombs, and some even burned tires.
The farmers are particularly opposed to the EU’s Green Deal, which aims to combat climate change and protect nature but requires farmers to reduce their use of harmful chemicals. This regulation, among others, has been a point of contention for farmers not just in Poland but across the EU.
This protest is part of a broader movement among EU farmers who are seeking adjustments to the Green Deal’s environmental restrictions and a return to customs duties on Ukrainian agricultural imports, which were lifted following Russia’s invasion.

The Polish government, led by Donald Tusk, is navigating a tightrope, attempting to address the farmers’ grievances while supporting Ukraine amidst its own political challenges, including upcoming local and European elections. In response to the situation, Tusk has proposed asking the EU to ban agricultural imports from Russia and Belarus and has invited farmer leaders for discussions.
