U.S. Bans Cruise Travel to Cuba to Prevent U.S. Dollars From Funding Communism, Tyranny

  • In an attempt to cut off U.S. dollars to Cuba, the Trump administration announced a ban on cruise ships traveling from the U.S. to the communist island, as well as a crackdown on using educational travel to visit effective Wednesday.
  • The administration is citing the Cuban government’s oppression of its people and its role in the Venezuelan humanitarian crisis.
  • The State Department said: “The United States will no longer permit visits to Cuba via passenger and recreational vessels, including cruise ships and yachts, and private and corporate aircraft.”
  • Under President Obama in 2016, cruise travel began from the U.S. to Cuba, which became the most popular way to visit the island.
  • However, on Tuesday, the Commerce Department released a statement: “Cruise ships as well as recreational and pleasure vessels are prohibited from departing the U.S. on temporary sojourn to Cuba effective tomorrow.”
  • This latest ban is part of the Trump administration rolling back the Obama administration’s attempts to normalize relations between the two nations.
  • National security adviser John Bolton said that Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela form a “troika of tyranny.”
  • Bolton tweeted: “The Administration has advanced the President’s Cuba policy by ending ‘veiled tourism’ to Cuba and imposing restrictions on vessels. We will continue to take actions to restrict the Cuban regime’s access to U.S. dollars.”
  • Last month, Cuba implemented food rationing to combat U.S. sanctions “and a drop in subsidized oil and other aid from Venezuela.”
  • Though not publicly disclosed, it is estimated that U.S. cruise travel brought Cuba millions of dollars each year.
