Trump Pressures Israel to Block Unpatriotic, Israel-Hating Tlaib and Omar from Entering Country for Planned Visit on Friday; Israel Called it a ‘Very Justified Decision’

  • With pressure from President Trump, Israel has decided to block Muslim Democratic U.S. Reps. Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib from visiting the country for a planned visit on Friday.
  • The move is a reversal since Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely had previously said the congresswomen were welcomed, but Trump’s “concerns about their support for Israel boycotts” seem to have swayed the decision.
  • Additionally, Israeli Ambassador Ron Dermer said last month that “the two Democrats would be permitted to visit out of respect for the U.S. Congress and the great alliance between Israel and America.”
  • However, on Thursday, Hotovely announced: “Israel has decided — we won’t enable the members of Congress to enter the country. We won’t allow those who deny our right to exist in this world to enter Israel. In principle, this is a very justified decision.”
  • Thursday morning, Trump tweeted: “It would show great weakness if Israel allowed Rep. Omar and Rep.Tlaib to visit. They hate Israel & all Jewish people, & there is nothing that can be said or done to change their minds. Minnesota and Michigan will have a hard time putting them back in office. They are a disgrace!”
  • Democrats have backed Omar and Tlaib with Sen. Bernie Sanders tweeting: “Banning Congresswomen Omar and Tlaib from entering Israel and Palestine is a sign of enormous disrespect to these elected leaders, to the United States Congress, and to the principles of democracy. The Israeli government should reverse this decision and allow them in.”
  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren tweeted: “Israel doesn’t advance its case as a tolerant democracy or unwavering US ally by barring elected members of Congress from visiting because of their political views. This would be a shameful, unprecedented move. I urge Israel’s government to allow @IlhanMN and @RashidaTlaib entry.”
  • According to earlier Israeli media reports, the government had “discussions of barring the freshman congresswomen due to their support for the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.”
  • Reports also suggested that “Israeli Interior Minister Arye Deri already made the decision to block them, though other parties still had to weigh in.”
  • Israel is known to ban supporters of the BDS movement, which both Omar and Tlaib have supported.
  • Haaretz reported, however, that “waivers can be granted for diplomatic figures.”
