Trump Administration Slaps Sanctions on Venezuelan President’s Son to Dissolve Socialist Regime

  • Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro’s son, Nicolás “Nicolasito” Maduro Guerra, was hit with sanctions by the Trump administration in an attempt to unseat Maduro to make way for Juan Guaidó, who the U.S. views as Venezuela’s legitimate leader.
  • Maduro Guerra is the leader of the Corps of the Special Inspectors of the Presidency and a member of Venezuela’s pro-government National Constituent Assembly.
  • A top Trump administration official said the sanctions “are part of ongoing efforts to root out examples of corruption throughout the Caracas government” and said the U.S. “will target those institutions and clamp down on their corrupt finances.”
  • The official said: “The point that we’re trying to make is that Maduro’s corruption is so endemic throughout the entire region and all of the institutions in Venezuela, largely with the exception of the National Assembly, that we are going to broadly, as we can find all examples of corruption and choking some of those corrupt finances.”
  • Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Maduro depends on his son and other allies “to maintain a stranglehold on the economy and suppress the people of Venezuela.”
  • Mnuchin also accused the National Constituent Assembly of trying to “rewrite the Venezuelan constitution and dissolve state institutions.”
  • Mnuchin added: “Maduro’s regime was built on fraudulent elections, and his inner circle lives in luxury off the proceeds of corruption while the Venezuelan people suffer.”
  • At the G-20 summit, President Trump discussed the Venezuelan crisis with Brazil’s president and will discuss Venezuela with other world leaders
  • A Trump official said: “That is because the president has not lost focus on Venezuela. This is still a major priority for this president and this is something that the president wants to see resolved in the short term because the people of Venezuela are suffering every day.”
  • U.S. sanctions have already been placed on more than 150 Maduro officials in continued efforts to unseat his socialist regime.
  • Currently, Venezuela’s economic situation is dire with millions of citizens fleeing or attempting to leave the country due to severe food, water and medicine shortages.
