Testing the Limits: Iran Close to Breaching its Nuclear Threshold Within Days in ‘Blackmail Attempt’ to Get U.S. to Ease Sanctions

  • According to U.N. inspectors, “Iran is on course to breach a threshold in its nuclear agreement within days by accumulating more enriched uranium than permitted.” However, the threshold wasn’t breached by the Thursday deadline.
  • Iran had previously “set Thursday as a deadline beyond which it would exceed the threshold for stockpiles of enriched uranium allowed under its 2015 nuclear deal with major powers.”
  • While Iran is still involved in the deal with various Western nations, President Trump withdrew from the Obama-era deal last year.
  • Iran’s possible violation of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal has created even more tension between the country and the U.S. as the two ratchet up war rhetoric.
  • Last week, Trump ordered airstrikes against Iran after his administration accused Iran of shooting down a U.S. drone, but later called them off. Iran has denied involvement.
  • The data from U.N. inspectors estimate that Iran will cross its limits in the next few days. One diplomat said Iran would likely cross the threshold by the weekend.
  • After the U.S. imposed sanctions on Iran, the country threatened to violate the 2015 deal if its partners didn’t get Trump to remove the sanctions.
  • France is one of the countries caught in the middle and said it “would ask Trump to suspend some sanctions” to facilitate negotiations between the U.S. and Iran.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron said: “I want to convince Trump that it is in his interest to reopen a negotiation process (and) go back on certain sanctions to give negotiations a chance.
  • Last month, “the United States sharply tightened its sanctions to force countries to eliminate purchases of Iranian oil, Iran’s main source of income.”
  • Trump said he doesn’t want to go to war with Iran, but if the U.S. did, it would be a “short war.” Iranian’s foreign minister said that “a short war with Iran is an illusion.”
