Rouhani Says It’s ‘Funny Story’ that U.S. Wants Meeting About 2015 Nuclear Deal Despite Withdrawal from Deal; Calls out U.S. ‘Hypocrisy’

  • Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that it is “sad irony” that the U.S. has called an emergency meeting about Iran violating the 2015 nuclear deal even though President Trump withdrew from the agreement in 2018.
  • On Wednesday, the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency, IAEA, is scheduled to meet to discuss the nuclear deal, also known as JCPOA, after Iran has admitted to violating parts of the agreement, including exceeding its maximum of enriched uranium.
  • Rouhani said: “On one side, Americans described the JCPOA as the worst possible deal and withdraw from it without any excuse and on the other side, when Iran reduces its commitments to the deal, they all express concern; while all should concern about U.S. that has violated the whole deal.”
  • Rouhani continued: “They have called for an emergency meeting of [the] Board of Governors, asking why Iran has abandoned some of its JCPOA commitments. This is a funny story that U.S. is following and such measures are rare in the world’s political history.”
  • Rouhani “also called out what he alleged was U.S. hypocrisy over uranium enrichment when the U.S. is the only country in history to have ever deployed nuclear weapons in an offensive capacity.”
  • While Iran is still part of the deal, it has violated previously agreed upon commitments after Trump re-imposed sanctions on the country after withdrawing from the agreement.
  • The U.S. and European partners still part of the deal have warned Iran not to increase its nuclear stockpile or face further consequences, but Iran says they have the right “within the framework of the deal.”
  • Iran has asked its European partners to get the U.S. to remove sanctions or it would continue to violate the deal.
  • Rouhani also had a warning for the U.K. who seized an Iranian oil tanker last week: “I warn England that you are the initiator of insecurity in seas and you will later understand its repercussions.”
  • Rouhani claimed the ship was seized “unjustly” at the behest of the U.S.
  • Despite all the tension and ramped-up rhetoric, “Iran says it’s prepared to return to full implementation of its landmark 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, but only when matched by the full compliance of all participants.”
