North Korea ‘Fired Multiple Unidentified Projectiles’ Days After Firing 2 Short-Range Missiles; Launches Come Hours After Trump Sent Kim Mementos from DMZ Visit in May

  • South Korean military officials have reported that North Korea has “fired multiple unidentified projectiles off its east coast Wednesday,” after firing two short-range missiles from the same area last week.
  • The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said the latest projectiles were fired from the Hodo Peninsula and a senior administration official said: “We are aware of reports of a missile launch from North Korea and we will continue to monitor the situation.”
  • A U.S. official confirmed “the projectiles traveled roughly 430 miles over the sea putting all of South Korea and parts of Japan in range.”
  • Last Thursday, North Korea launched its first missiles since President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong un held their denuclearization talk in May.
  • North Korea called last week’s launch “a solemn warning to South Korean military warmongers who plan to hold joint military drills with the U.S.”
  • Per reports, “the latest launches also came hours after a senior U.S. official said President Donald Trump has sent mementos from his brief visit to an inter-Korean border town late last month to Kim.”
  • After the meeting at the denuclearization zone, Trump and Kim agreed to resume talks in the coming weeks, but there have been no reports of meetings between the two leaders.
  • Some experts believe “North Korea wants a U.S. promise to ease sanctions, accept a slow, step-by-step disarmament process by North Korea or make other concessions once the diplomacy restarts.”
  • Though the leaders haven’t met recently, they contend that they have a good relationship now despite their contentious relationship in the past.
  • Trump tried to downplay the seriousness of last week’s missile launches and stressed that “short-range” was the key word.
