Iran Denies U.S. Destroyed Its Drone; Accuses U.S. of Destroying Own Drone; Iran’s Revolutionary Guard to Release Before-and-After Photos as ‘Proof’

  • After President Trump announced on Thursday that the U.S. destroyed an Iranian drone in the Strait of Hormuz that flew too close to a U.S. ship, Iran denied the claim on Friday and accused the U.S. of destroying its own drone.
  • Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi tweeted: “We have not lost any drone in the Strait of Hormuz nor anywhere else. I am worried that USS Boxer has shot down their own UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) by mistake!”
  • An Iranian news outlet reported military spokesman Gen. Abolfazl Shekari as saying “all Iranian drones that are in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, including the one which the U.S. president mentioned, after carrying out scheduled identification and control missions, have returned to their bases.”
  • On its website, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard wrote “it would release before-and-after images from the drone to prove it was not destroyed.” However, the group didn’t give a timeline.
  • The Revolutionary Guard said its drone “had been carrying out regular surveillance when the USS Boxer arrived, and transmitted photos of the ship.”
  • The Guard added “its forces continue to carefully monitor all movements of foreigners,” including “the terrorist forces of the U.S. and the British in the strait and the Gulf.”
  • Trump previously said that the Iranian drone threatened the USS Boxer by flying within 1000 feet of the ship, which Trump called “provocative and hostile.”
  • Trump said: “This is the latest of many provocative and hostile actions by Iran against vessels operating in international waters. The United States reserves the right to defend our personnel, facilities, and interests.”
  • The president added: “I also call on other nations to protect their ships as they go through the strait and to work with us in the future.”
  • Trump didn’t go into specifics on how the drone was destroyed, but CNN reported that the USS Boxer “used electronic jamming to bring it down rather than hitting it with a missile.”
  • Last month, Iran shot down a U.S. drone in the same area, which prompted Trump to order airstrikes against the country but ultimately called them off.
  • The U.S. has accused Iran of several acts of hostility over the past few months and interfering with its interests in the Middle East. Iran has denied all accusations.
