Deal is Kaput-ski: Russia Pulls Out of INF Treaty After Trump Withdrew Last Year; Possible Discussions on New Treaty

  • Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that will suspend the country’s INF treaty with the U.S., which he pledged to do in February after the U.S. previously pulled out.
  • The law reads in part: “Suspend the [INF] Treaty between the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and the United States of America on the elimination of their medium- and short-range missiles, signed in Washington on 8 December 1987.”
  • The Cold War-era deal “eliminated nuclear and conventional ground-launched ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges of 500 to 5,500 kilometers.” Both the U.S. and Russia accused each other of violating the treaty.
  • At an international forum, Putin said: “Its [the world’s] transformation toward multi-polarity is obvious. Meanwhile, the stubborn unwillingness of a range of states to accept this new reality results in raising global confrontation, international law being ignored, and strategic stability being undermined. All this impedes cooperation.”
  • Last October, President Trump announced that the U.S. was withdrawing from the INF in which case Russia promised to do the same in a “mirror response.”
  • The treaty was signed in 1987 and has been “a cornerstone of European security since its signing” between the two powerful nations.
  • When Trump terminated the deal, he said the U.S. would “then develop weapons,” and Putin responded by saying Moscow “would do the same thing.”
  • In May, Trump talked about securing a new nuclear deal with Russia during a phone call with Putin, which the White House said would “either be a new multilateral accord between the U.S., Russia and China — or the extension of the current U.S.-Russia strategic nuclear accord.”
  • In the meantime, the two countries are working on setting up a meeting between U.S. Under-Secretary of State Andrea Thompson and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov to talk about strategic security.
