Volatile Situation Continues in Philly: Gunman Shoots, Injures 6 Officers, Held 2 Hostage, Refuses to Surrender; All Officers Expected to Survive

  • An hours-long standoff continues in Philadelphia as at least one gunman remains holed up in a rowhome after opening fire on police who were attempting to serve a narcotics warrant.
  • The gunman shot and injured six police officers who are all expected to survive.
  • Two officers were trapped in the house with the gunman for more than four hours in what was being called a “potential hostage situation” but were eventually able to escape.
  • Police Commissioner Richard Ross reported that “the shooting began around 4:30 p.m. as officers went to a home in a north Philadelphia neighborhood of brick and stone rowhomes, to serve a narcotics warrant.”
  • Police confirmed that  “shots were still being fired three hours later, and officers returned fire.”
  • Ross said that numerous “officers had to escape through windows and doors to get (away) from a barrage of bullets.”
  • Ross said that officers continued to urge the gunman to surrender, called him on the phone to speak to him directly several times and used a loudspeaker to speak with him as well.
  • Ross said: “We’re doing everything within our power to get him to come out. He has the highest assurance he’s not going to be harmed when he comes out.”
  • When asked earlier about the two officers who were trapped inside the home, Ross said: “We believe they’re OK, and I’m not going to say much more about that right now, out of concern for their safety.”
  • At around 6:15 pm local time, Sergeant Eric Gipp tweeted: “UPDATE: Suspect is still firing. SIX (6) PPD Officers shot – at area hospitals with non life threatening injuries. Additional officers also receiving treatment for non-gunshot injuries. Continue to avoid area. Situation is active and ongoing.”
  • Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney: “I’m a little angry about someone having all that weaponry, all that fire power, but we’ll get to that another day.”
