Trump Digs in Heels on Tweets that ‘The Squad’ Should ‘Go Back’ to their Countries; Demands the Progressives Apologize to the U.S., Israel and Office of President

  • President Trump created a firestorm on Sunday when he tweeted that the four female progressive lawmakers of color in the House, known as “The Squad,” “should go back to the broken and crime infested countries they came from,” but instead of bowing to public pressure to apologize, Trump has stated that the women should apologize to the country for their “racist” and “disgusting” language and actions.
  • Except for Omar, who immigrated to the U.S. at 12-years-old, the rest of the lawmakers were born in the United States.
  • Amid dissension between establishment Democrat figures like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and newcomer progressives like Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley and Rashida Tlaib, Trump decided to side with Pelosi after AOC called out Pelosi last week for allegedly targeting women of color.
  • On Sunday, Trump tweeted: “So interesting to see ‘Progressive’ Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run.”
  • He continued: “Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how it is done.”
  • Trump concluded with: “These places need your help badly, you can’t leave fast enough. I’m sure that Nancy Pelosi would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”
  • Despite the left and some on the right calling his remarks outright racist and insensitive, Trump dug in his heels, refusing to apologize and went after the women again on Twitter on Monday.
  • Trump tweeted: “When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said. So many people are angry at them & their horrible & disgusting actions!”
  • He added: “If Democrats want to unite around the foul language & racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular & unrepresentative Congresswomen, it will be interesting to see how it plays out. I can tell you that they have made Israel feel abandoned by the U.S.”
  • Marc Short, chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence, said that Trump’s comments were not racist, and he was only “responding to very specific comments” made by Omar and wasn’t making a “universal statement.”
  • Short added: “I don’t think that the president’s intent any way is racist,” and pointed out the fact that Trump chose Elaine Chao, who was born in Taiwan and married to Sen. Mitch McConnell, as his transportation secretary.
  • Short said: “The administration is welcoming of all nationalities into the United States.”
  • Pelosi condemned Trump and said he wants to “make America white again.”
  • AOC tweeted: “Mr. President, the country I ‘come from,’ & the country we all swear to, is the United States. You rely on a frightened America for your plunder.”
  • Omar tweeted: “You are stoking white nationalism (because) you are angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda.”
  • Sen. Lindsey Graham gave Trump advice and said: “Don’t get personal. Don’t take the bait,” and added that AOC and her colleagues “are American citizens” who were “duly elected.”
  • However, Graham added: “We all know that AOC and this crowd are a bunch of communists. They hate Israel. They hate our own country.”
  • Republican Rep. Chip Roy wrote on Sunday: “POTUS was wrong to say any American citizen, whether in Congress or not, has any ‘home’ besides the U.S.”
  • Condemnation for Trump’s remarks came across the pond with outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May admonishing the president by calling his language “unacceptable.”
