Pelosi, AOC Hold Private Meeting; AOC Avoids Reporters Afterwards, Pelosi Described Meeting as ‘Nice’

  • House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and freshman progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez held a meeting to discuss their differences, which have dominated headlines for weeks. After the meeting, Pelosi said it was “nice” but remained rather tight-lipped.
  • Afterwards, Pelosi told reporters: “I don’t think we have that many differences.” Pelosi added: “In our caucus we have our differences. Respect that instead of making a big issue of it. We just had a meeting to clear the air.”
  • Pelosi continued to downplay the magnitude of the meeting and said: “I don’t think there ever was any hatchet to bury” and “compared the dynamics to a family resolving a disagreement.”
  • AOC’s spokesman Corbin Trent said: “It was a very positive and productive meeting about progressive priorities.” AOC avoided reporters after the meeting.
  • There has been tension between the two lawmakers since AOC didn’t fall in line and vote with the Democratic establishment on a border funding bill.
  • Afterwards, Pelosi criticized the freshman and other members of the progressive “Squad,” where Pelosi commented that the lawmakers “were just four votes in a large Democratic caucus.”
  • These remarks prompted AOC to claim that Pelosi was targeting female lawmakers of color and “recently criticized Pelosi, saying she felt Pelosi had been outright disrespectful by the explicit singling out of newly elected women of color for criticism.”
  • Pelosi hasn’t publicly responded to AOC’s accusations, but said that she meets with her colleagues frequently and this meeting was no different.
  • The two women come from vastly different worlds and entered politics in different generations with Pelosi being 79 and AOC is 29.
  • “Pelosi entered elective politics after having five children and rose through a male-dominated House of Representatives to its highest post. Ocasio-Cortez rode a wave of progressive sentiment to win a Democratic primary last year over former Rep. Joe Crowley and the weakened Queens Democratic machine.”
  • AOC and fellow “Squad” members, Reps. Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib and Ayanna Pressley, have constantly challenged more moderate Democrats, which Pelosi is a part of.
