No Competition: NC’s Greg Murphy Trounces Dem in Pivotal 3rd Congressional District Race

  • Republican Dr. Greg Murphy won North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District in a dominating fashion over Democratic opponent former mayor of Greenville, North Carolina, Allen Thomas.
  • With Murphy’s victory, the GOP keeps control of the seat that was formerly held by the late Republican Rep. Walter Jones Jr.
  • Murphy was declared the winner “shortly after polls closed on Tuesday,” despite the fact that Thomas put up a strong fight for the seat and “raised more than $560,000.”
  • The official numbers haven’t been released yet, but it’s expected that Murphy won with a double-digit lead.
  • The 3rd congressional district “covers a substantial portion of eastern North Carolina, including the Outer Banks.” The seat “became open earlier this year when the long-term incumbent, Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC), passed away.”
  • Further, “the district is one of the most of the conservative in the entire state, with President Donald Trump having carried it overwhelmingly in 2016.”
  • Although the district is heavily conservative, “the 3rd became a battleground between establishment Republicans and allies of President Donald Trump heading into the primary for the special election.”
  • Murphy was supported “by grassroots conservatives and Freedom Caucus heavyweights like Reps. Mark Meadows (R-NC) and Jim Jordan (R-OH). His main primary opponent, Dr. Joan Perry, was backed by a bevy of Washington, D.C. special interests tied to the establishment.”
  • Trump tweeted after Murphy’s victory: “BIG NIGHT FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL!”
