‘Failing’ NYT Tries to Undermine Trump’s Massive Mexican Immigration Deal; The Post Contradicts NYT Report with Real Facts

  • According to a “New York Times” report, the Trump administration’s deal with Mexico to curb illegal immigration was nothing more than “a hodge-podge of recycled ideas that America’s southern neighbor had already agreed to.” However, the Trump administration denies the claim and another report says NYT’s claim is erroneous.
  • After President Trump threatened to hit Mexican imports with a 5% tariff if the nation didn’t do more to curb the number of illegals crossing the U.S. border, Mexico and the U.S. reached a deal that prevented Trump from imposing the tariffs.
  • “The New York Times” said this sequence of events is wrong since a deal was already being worked out before Trump threatened the tariffs.
  • However, “The Washington Post” came out with its report that said Mexico’s measures would be “more substantial than promises made by Mexican officials in the past,” contradicting the NYT’s report.
  • “The Post” report also cited officials from the Trump administration and Mexico, along with various documents.
  • In “The Post’s” report, the State Department said “Mexico will take “unprecedented steps to increase enforcement to curb irregular migration, to include the deployment of its National Guard throughout Mexico, giving priority to its southern border.”
  • The report notes that Mexico will deploy 6,000 National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, and official Mexican documents said this was “the first time in recent history that Mexico has decided to take operational control of its southern border as a priority.”
  • However, NYT’s report said “the Mexican government had already pledged to deploy its guard to the border in March during talks with former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.”
  • Trump blasted NYT, tweeting: “When will the Failing New York Times admit that their front page story on the the new Mexico deal at the Border is a FRAUD and nothing more than a badly reported “hit job” on me, something that has been going on since the first day I announced for the presidency! Sick Journalism.”
  • To highlight the importance of the deal, Trump tweeted: “We have fully signed and documented another very important part of the Immigration and Security deal with Mexico, one that the U.S. has been asking about getting for many years…”
  • He added: “It will be revealed in the not too distant future and will need a vote by Mexico’s Legislative body!”
