Back Off: Pompeo Calls Foul on John Kerry Meeting with Iranian Official, Violating Logan Act

  • In response to former Secretary of State John Kerry meeting with top Iranian officials in 2018, current Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said it’s time for Kerry “to get off the stage.”
  • Pompeo accused Kerry of “inappropriately engaging” with foreign actors, which is “undermining the Trump administration’s foreign policy.”
  • In an interview, Pompeo also stated he wants Kerry investigated for violating the Logan Act, “a federal law which prohibits private citizens from negotiating on behalf of the U.S. government without authorization.”
  • Pompeo stated: “It is ahistorical and completely unhelpful when previous secretaries of state are continuing to engage in the tasks that they engaged in when they were the secretary of state. I’ll leave it at that in the sense of it’s time to get off the stage for the previous administration.”
  • Senator Marco Rubio is also asking Attorney General William Barr to investigate Kerry’s meeting last year to see if he broke the law.
  • Previously, President Trump said Kerry “should be prosecuted” for Logan Act violations.
  • Kerry’s spokesperson said that Trump’s statement was “simply wrong, end of story.”
