After Tlaib Turned Down Israel’s Offer to Enter West Bank on Humanitarian Basis, Israeli Interior Minister Said ‘Her Hatred for Israel Overcomes Her Love for Her Grandmother’

  • Israel reversed course on Friday when the interior ministry approved progressive Rep. Rashida Tlaib entry in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on a “humanitarian basis” to visit her 90-year-old grandmother after it denied her entry into the country on Thursday after alleged pressure by President Trump, but Tlaib turned down the latest offer.
  • Tlaib tweeted: “When I won, it gave the Palestinian people hope that someone will finally speak the truth about the inhumane conditions. I can’t allow the State of Israel to take away that light by humiliating me & use my love for my sity to bow down to their oppressive & racist policies.”
  • Tlaib continued: “Silencing me & treating me like a criminal is not what she wants for me. It would kill a piece of me. I have decided that visiting my grandmother under these oppressive conditions stands against everything I believe in–fighting against racism, oppression & injustice.”
  • Israeli Interior Minister Aryeh Deri didn’t take kindly to Tlaib turning down the invitation and said: “Rep. Tlaib just tweeted that she won’t be coming to Israel. Just yesterday she sent me a letter, asking to visit her 90 year old grandmother saying, ‘it might be my last chance to meet her.”
  • Deri continued: “I authorized this humanitarian trip, but it turns out that it was a provocation to embarrass Israel. Her hatred for Israel overcomes her love for her grandmother.”
  • On Thursday, Tlaib sent a letter to Deri requesting permission to visit her family after the Israeli government announced it was not allowing her or fellow progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar entry into the country due to their support of anti-Israel boycotts.
  • Tlaib released a statement on Friday that said in part, “[Israel] used my love and desire to see my grandmother to silence me and made my ability to do so contingent upon my signing a letter – reflecting just how undemocratic and afraid they are of the truth my trip would reveal about what is happening in the State of Israel and to Palestinians living under occupation with United States support.”
  • With his ongoing feud with Tlaib, Omar and two other progressive lawmakers, “Trump had publicly lobbied Israeli leaders to block the lawmakers. On Thursday, Trump tweeted that ‘it would show great weakness if Israel allowed Omar and Tlaib to visit.”
  • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended his country’s decision in a statement released on Thursday where he said Omar and Tlaib are “leading activists in promoting the legislation of boycotts against Israel in the American Congress.”
  • Netanyahu also claimed the “sole objective of their planned trip to Israel is to strengthen the boycott against us and deny Israel’s legitimacy.”
