  • The shooter who killed three, including 6-year-old Stephen Romero, and wounded at least 15 others at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California on Sunday, has been identified as 19-year-old Santino William Legan.
  • Police responded to calls about shots fired, arriving about a minute later and shot Legan dead.
  • Authorities say that Legan “cut through a fence and opened fire on a crowd eating and listening to music” at the popular festival that draws upwards of 100,000 people.
  • Authorities also said that Legan appeared to shoot people at random with a rifle.
  • On Monday, “police searched the Legan family’s two-story Gilroy home and a dusty car parked outside,” before leaving the residence “with paper bags and what appeared to be other evidence.”
  • Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee said that “some witnesses reported a second suspect, but it was unclear whether that person was armed or just helped in some way;” however, there’s an ongoing manhunt.
  • Alberto Romero, Stephen’s father, said: “My son had his whole life to live and he was only 6. That’s all I can say.”
  • Maribel Romero, Stephen’s grandmother, said she “searched several hospitals before learning he had died.” She described her grandson as “always kind, happy and, you know, playful.”
  • Wounded victims were taken to several hospitals with their conditions ranging from fair to critical. Some have undergone surgery, and at least 5 have been treated and released.
  • According to reports, “the Gilroy Garlic Festival features food, cooking contests and music. It’s a decades-old staple in the agricultural city of 50,000 about 80 miles southeast of San Francisco. Festivalgoers pass through metal detectors and their bags are searched at the event.”
  • President Trump called Legan a “wicked murderer” and said: “We express our deepest sadness and sorrow for the families who lost a precious loved one in the horrific shooting last night in Gilroy, California.”
  • California Gov. Gavin Newsom tweeted that the shooting was “nothing short of horrific,” and noted “he was grateful for the police response.”
