Philly Shooter Has Extensive Criminal Record; Arrested More than Dozen Times; Shouldn’t Have Had Access to Firearms; Trump Tweets U.S. ‘Must Get Much Tougher on Street Crime’

  • Maurice Hill, 36, the suspected gunman accused of shooting and injuring six Philadelphia officers and setting off a more than 7-hour standoff on Wednesday where he exchanged gunfire with police, has an extensive rap sheet since the age of 18.
  • Hill gave himself up to police shortly after midnight on Thursday by exiting the Philly rowhome he had been holed up in with his hands in the air.
  • All of the injured officers were treated at local hospitals and have since been released.
  • Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said he spent hours on Wednesday negotiating with Hill over the phone to turn himself in and “said the situation that unfolded could have been far worse.”
  • Ross told reporters on Thursday: “I am surprised he came out because he was indicating to some that he wasn’t going to do that and that he was not going back to prison.”
  • Ross continued: “Many of you have found out about his history. It’s very significant. In fact, he told me on the phone, he used the word ‘extensive,’ he had an extensive criminal history and that he knew the system. This is why he was making the outlandish demands he was making.”
  • FOX29 obtained court documents that revealed Hill had been arrested at least a dozen times since he turned 18.
  • Additionally, “the 36-year-old has been in and out of prison since 2002 after convictions for such crimes as illegal possession of guns and aggravated assault.”
  • Obtained court records revealed that “Hill also spent time in federal prison, pleading guilty to federal firearms violations in 2008 after he was caught with a Smith & Wesson .357 and a Taurus PT .45 semiautomatic.”
  • Under the law, “prior felony convictions should have kept him from owning those weapons.”
  • Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said on Thursday “that Hill should not have been on the streets, but that law enforcement officials did not have a crystal ball to predict his behavior.”
  • Krasner also stated that “Hill has not yet been charged, but may face numerous counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault in addition to likely drug charges.”
  • Krasner added: “There are more than enough charges, so Mr. Maurice Hill may never exit jail.”
  • President Trump weighed in on Thursday and tweeted: “The Philadelphia shooter should never have been allowed to be on the streets. He had a long and very dangerous criminal record. Looked like he was having a good time after his capture, and after wounding so many police. Long sentence – must get much tougher on street crime!”
