Immigration Raids Back On; Illegals Facing Arrest, Detention, Possible Deportation Over Weekend

  • After last month’s nationwide immigration raid was scrapped, the operation is now scheduled to take place over the weekend to target people who are living in the U.S. illegally.
  • According to officials, the operation “would target people with final deportation orders, including families whose immigration cases were fast-tracked by judges in 10 major cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Miami.”
  • ICE released a statement reading: “As always, ICE prioritizes the arrest and removal of unlawfully present aliens who pose a threat to national security, public safety and border security.”
  • An ICE spokesman added: “All of those in violation of the immigration laws may be subject to immigration arrest, detention and – if found removable by final order – removal from the United States.”
  • The “New York Times” reported that “the raids would target at least 2,000 immigrants who have been ordered deported and crossed the border recently.”
  • However, “other undocumented people could also be arrested if the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agency intercepts them during the operation.”
  • Immigrants and advocates are in an uproar about the upcoming raids and have mobilized to demonstrate and try to stave off the operation.
  • According to administration officials who spoke anonymously, “the sweep remains in flux and could begin later.”
  • Despite the uncertainty, “activists ramped up efforts to prepare by bolstering know-your-rights pocket guides, circulating information about hotlines and planning public demonstrations” among immigrants.
  • Vigils have been planned to take place on Friday outside of detention centers and protests are expected on Saturday in several cities across the U.S.
  • Last month, Trump announced that immigration raids would begin in an effort to deport millions of illegal immigrants from the U.S., but cancelled the operation before it took place after a call with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
  • Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tweeted: “The Trump administration is preparing sweeping raids on undocumented people as the president threatens to go against the Supreme Court and demand citizenship information through the Census.”
