AOC Continues to Receive Backlash Over Ridiculous Comments About Immigrant Women Told to ‘Drink Out of Toilet’ at Detention Center

  • Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez continues to receive backlash from her comments about migrant women being told to drink out of the toilet during her recent trip to a detention center on the U.S. southern border.
  • Both current and former immigration officials have denounced her comments and said immigration employees “don’t treat people this way.”
  • AOC called border officials “violent” and said there was a “violent culture.” She accused agents of treating immigrants inhumanely since she claimed migrant women and children didn’t have access to water and were forced to drink out of toilets.
  • Former ICE Director Tom Homan said: “They are not drinking out of the toilet—no Border Patrol agent is going to make anyone drink out of the toilet. It’s just ridiculous on its face.”
  • Homan accused AOC of “clearly, intentionally misinforming the American public” and said “she’s clearly lost all credibility.”
  • Homan explained that what AOC was referring to was the “apparatus in holding cells that has an attached sink and toilet, but two separate water lines.”
  • Homan explained: “You’re drinking out of the same apparatus, the same piece of equipment, but there are two separate water lines—one going to the commode, one going to the sink.”
  • AOC pushed back and said she saw the apparatus, but there was only one at the station and the “sink portion wasn’t working.”
  • She tweeted: “Except there was just one, and the sink portion was not functioning – @AyannaPressley smartly tried to open the faucet, and nothing came out. So the women were told they could drink out of the bowl.”
  • Another former acting ICE director said: “I have never seen anything like that. And look, she was there for three minutes and now she’s an expert on what this facility looks like?”
  • Chief of law enforcement operations at the U.S. Border Patrol, Brian Hastings, said: “We don’t treat people that way. We provide fresh water. We provide food. We provide sanitary items as well as items for bathing and personal hygiene.”
  • President of the National Border Patrol Council, Brandon Judd, said: “Nobody is forced to drink out of a toilet and nobody is told to drink out of a toilet. It’s completely and totally a baseless and ridiculous allegation and frankly it needs to be investigated and she needs to be exposed.”
  • President Trump’s counselor, Kellyanne Conway, said that AOC’s comments actually hurt migrant women and called her visit a photo-op.
  • Conway tweeted: How many migrant women did @AOC help by voting AGAINST the $4.6 billion bipartisan humanitarian aid that is FOR THEM? (She even voted against the Democrat aid package). All talk, no dollars.”
