What a Joke: One-Term Congressman Joe Walsh Seriously Considering Challenging Trump in Republican Primary, Calling Trump ‘Horrible’ Person Despite Own History of Racist, Offensive, Fear-Mongering Statements

  • One-term Illinois congressman and conservative radio host Joe Walsh said he’s seriously considering launching a campaign to challenge President Trump in the Republican primary.
  • Walsh said on Thursday: “I’m strongly, strongly considering it. That’s — again, I’m not trying to be cute or coy. I’ve told you before — if somebody’s going to get in there and go after him … it’s got to be done soon.”
  • Walsh continued: “You’re running out of time. But more importantly, these are not conventional times. Look at the guy in the White House. These are urgent times.”
  • When asked about when he would make his decision, Walsh said: “Labor Day’s in what — a week. If you want to get in, you’ve got to get in within the next week or so.”
  • Last week, Walsh “apologized for his role in helping elect an unfit con man.”
  • Elected to Congress in 2010 as part of the Tea Party movement, Walsh “said he voted for Trump in 2016 only because Trump wasn’t Hillary Clinton.”
  • Walsh, however, “said he changed his views after Trump’s press conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland, last year in which he sided with the Russian strongman over his own intelligence community’s assessments of meddling in the election.”
  • Walsh also called Trump a “horrible human being,” and said that Trump “was setting a poor example for children with his divisive rhetoric.”
  • Walsh said: “The only way you primary Donald Trump and beat him is to expose him for the con man he is. And if I did it, John, that’s what I’d do.
  • He also said “that the silence from other Republicans is what’s so disappointing.”
  • However, Walsh is known for his own controversial rhetoric and pushing far-right conspiracy theories like in 2014 when he tweeted: “It makes Dems seethe and my fellow Repubs uncomfortable when I say it out loud, but so what? It explains everything. Barack Obama is Muslim.”
  • That same year, Walsh was “very annoyed” because he was more than likely going to “get into trouble for using racial slurs.”
  • In 2016, Walsh tweeted: “Obama is not on our side. He’s our enemy.” He also tweeted: “By purposely not saying ‘Islam’ or ‘Islamic terror’ Obama is an enemy of the state. Treat him that way.’”
  • In 2018, Walsh said: “To say that it’s ‘racist’ to call Haiti a shithole is like saying it’s ‘racist’ to say Chicago has a violence problem. Haiti is a shithole and it’s run by blacks. The violence in Chicago is all black on black. Those aren’t racist statements. They’re just facts.”
