Trump Speaks at Pennsylvania Petrochemical Plant About Advances in Manufacturing, Energy Under His Administration; Lashes Out at Media, 2020 Democratic Rivals and Other Critics

  • During a speech in Monaca, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday at a Shell petrochemical plant, President Trump lashed out at his 2020 Democratic rivals, various critics and the media that was originally billed to be about manufacturing and energy.
  • Trump spoke to the plant’s workers for about an hour, and while he intermittently spoke about “his administration’s efforts to expand pipelines, produce more energy and cut regulations, the president regularly went off on tangents swiping at critics.”
  • Lashing out at the media, Trump said: “Can you imagine if I got a fair press? I mean, we’re leading without it. Can you imagine if these people treated me fairly? The election would be over.”
  • Trump also mentioned the Academy Awards and said: “The Academy Awards is on hard times now. You know why? Because they started taking us on. Everyone got tired of it.”
  • During the speech, Trump also “disputed claims that he’s profited off the presidency by claiming that lawsuits over the Emoluments Clause and other legal fees have cost him a fortune.”
  • Trump explained: “I don’t care. You know, if you’re wealthy it doesn’t matter. I just want to do a great job.”
  • The president was at the facility to take a tour of the plant “where natural gas will be turned into plastic.”
  • Trump also discussed “his administration’s decision to roll back regulations that prevented plants like the one he visited Tuesday from being built and cited the boom in energy production during his presidency.”
  • Trump, during his speech, “mocked the use of wind as an energy source and ripped the progressive Green New Deal and the Democratic presidential candidates who support it.”
  • Trump said: “I don’t want to speak badly about it. I want to encourage them. That should be their platform, I don’t want to do it too early. I did it very early with Pocahontas. I should’ve probably waited. She’s staging a comeback on Sleepy Joe,” referring to Sen. Elizabeth Warren and former Vice President Joe Biden, respectively.
  • Trump added: “I don’t know who’s going to win. But we’ll have to hit Pocahontas very hard again if she does win. But she’s staging a little bit of a comeback. What a group. Pocahontas and Sleepy Joe. I don’t think they give a damn about western Pennsylvania.”
  • Trump won Pennsylvania by about 45,000 votes in the 2016 election and “won the county where Tuesday’s speech took place by 18 percentage points.”
