Trump Admonishes Supporters for ‘Send Her Back’ Chant; Said He Wasn’t Happy With It, Disagreed with Crowd

  • A day after supporters chanted “send her back” at his Greenville, North Carolina rally, President Trump said he wasn’t happy with and disagreed with the chant regarding progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar who the president has been embroiled in a public feud with.
  • Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said: “I was not happy with it. I disagree with it. But again, I didn’t say that. They did. But I disagree with it.”
  • Trump added that “started speaking very quickly” to stop the chant and said: “It was quite a chant, and I felt a little bit badly about it.”
  • Trump also said: “There is far more energy on the right than there is on the left. I think we have far more support than they do and I think we have far more energy than they do. And we’re going to have a very interesting election. But I was not happy when I heard that chant.”
  • However, the chants started after Trump went into a tirade against Omar who he’s accused of “hating America” and being anti-Semitic and anti-American.
  • According to reports, during a meeting earlier Thursday, the chant was “condemned by a growing number of Republican lawmakers, with House GOP leadership conveying their concerns to Vice President Mike Pence.”
  • Very few Republicans have come out publicly to admonish Trump, but Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy told reporters that such chants “have no place in our party and no place in this country.”
  • However, he clarified that Trump’s attacks on Omar and the rest of the women is based on ideology and not race or ethnicity and said “this is about socialism vs. freedom.”
  • Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger tweeted the chant was “ugly, wrong, & would send chills down the spines of our Founding Fathers. This ugliness must end, or we risk our great union.”
  • Last weekend and this week, Trump said that Omar and the three other female minority progressive lawmakers who make up “The Squad” could “go back” to their countries and “leave America” if they don’t like it.
  • His tweets and comments prompted the House to pass a resolution condemning his attacks against the lawmakers as racist.
