• After Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand announced that she was dropping her 2020 presidential bid, President Trump wasted no time in mocking her failed campaign.
  • Gillibrand decided to exit the “Democratic primary after the latest batch of polls did not help her qualify for the September debate. She was among several candidates who fell short of the 130,000-donor threshold and failed to reach 2 percent in four separate polls.”
  • In a video posted on Twitter, Gillibrand said: “After more than eight incredible months, I’m ending my presidential campaign. We wanted to win this race, but it’s important to know when it’s not your time and to know how you can best serve your community and country.”
  • The senator also said: “I think being able to have a voice on a debate stage, when other candidates have that, is really important. And without it, I just didn’t see our path.”
  • Gillibrand added: “I think it’s important to know how you can best serve. Let’s go beat Donald Trump and win back the Senate.”
  • Gillibrand also remarked “that while she would support the eventual Democratic nominee whoever it may be, she would be particularly excited to see the party nominate a woman.”
  • Gillibrand continued: “I think that women have a unique ability to bring people together and heal this country. I think a woman nominee would be inspiring and exciting. I will support whoever the nominee is, and I will do whatever it takes to beat Trump.”
  • Afterwards, Trump tweeted: “A sad day for the Democrats, Kirsten Gillibrand has dropped out of the Presidential Primary. I’m glad they never found out that she was the one I was really afraid of!”
  • Gillibrand is the latest Democrat to drop out of the crowded field after “former Gov. John Hickenlooper of Colorado, Gov. Jay Inslee of Washington state and Rep. Seth Moulton of Massachusetts” abandoned their campaigns.
  • According to the latest poll numbers, “roughly half of the Democratic candidates have yet to qualify for the fall debates, including Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, billionaire Democratic donor Tom Steyer, and spiritual guru Marianne Williamson.”
