Bloated Field of Dem Presidential Contenders Will Have 5 NBC/MSNBC Moderators for 1st Two Debates

  • NBC has announced the five moderators for the first two Democrat presidential primary debates will be: Lester Holt, Chuck Todd, Rachel Maddow, José Diaz-Balart and Savannah Guthrie.
  • The debates will take place in Miami, June 26-27 at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, 9-11 p.m. ET.
  • There has been praise for NBC for the diversity of the moderators with four out of five being women or people of color.
  • Per NBC News: “Both debate nights will have the same format. Holt will moderate the first hour, with Guthrie and Diaz-Balart appearing alongside him; Holt will also appear in the second hour, with Todd and Maddow moderating.”
  • Though there are currently 24 contenders, only 20 Democratic presidential candidates will participate, with 10 debating each night.
  • To qualify for the debate, “candidates need to either register 1 percent support in three qualified polls or have 65,000 unique donors to their campaign, with a minimum of 200 different donors in at least 20 states.”
  • If more than 20 candidates qualify, “the Democratic National Committee will use a series of tiebreakers to determine who makes it onto the stage.”
  • Candidates like Mayor Wayne Messam (D), Montana Gov. Steve Bullock, former Sen. Mike Gravel (D) and Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA) haven’t met requirements to participate in the debates.
