How Enlightening: CBS Poll Shows Majority of Dems Support Impeachment While Majority of Republicans Feel Trump Acted Properly

  • Polls have been conducted to gauge how the American public feels about the impeachment inquiry into President Trump. The CBS poll shows about 55% of those polled agree with the inquiry.
  • Partisan lines have clearly been drawn and “most Democrats call the president’s handling of matters with Ukraine illegal, and deserving of impeachment.”
  • However, “most Republicans call his actions proper — or, even if improper, then still legal — and feel they’re an example of things that past presidents typically did, too.”
  • The American public thinks “that because Congress is now taking up the matter, it will be unable to work on other issues.”
  • As “the inquiry begins, there is no national consensus on how to assess the president’s actions.”
  • The poll shows that “almost nine in 10 Democrats approve of the inquiry, and two-thirds strongly approve.”
  • However, “prior to the inquiry, some had wondered if taking up impeachment proceedings might divide a Democratic rank-and-file that has been long concerned with other policies like health care and guns.”
  • With the latest inquiry spearheaded by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, “most moderate Democrats side with liberal Democrats in supporting impeachment proceedings. Of those who say they voted for a Democratic House candidate in 2018, nine in 10 feel this inquiry is necessary.”
  • On the other hand, “when characterizing the president’s actions in particular, just under one-third of Americans say the president’s handling of matters with Ukraine may have been improper but were nonetheless still legal.”
  • Other results show that “just over a quarter, including most Republicans, says the president acted properly. Another four in 10, including most Democrats, feel he has acted illegally.”
  • The majority of Republicans think “that the president’s aims in the matter were to protect U.S. interests and stop corruption. Seven in 10 Republicans feel that his dealings with Ukraine are typical of what most past presidents have probably done in dealing with foreign countries.”

China Expected to Display Military Might During Parade this Week, Including Nuclear Missile that Could Reach U.S. in 30 Minutes

  • During China’s military parade this week to celebrate its national holiday, the country “might show off its rapidly developing arsenal, which may include a nuclear-capable missile that could reach the United States in 30 minutes.”
  • Chinese media said “the Dongfeng (DF) 41 is one of a series of new weapons” that “might be unveiled during the parade marking the ruling Communist Party’s 70th anniversary in power. Others included a supersonic drone and a robot submarine.”
  • Analysts have predicted that “DF-41, flying at 25 times the speed of sound, might be able to reach the United States in 30 minutes with up to 10 warheads for separate targets — a technology known as MIRV, or multiple independently targetable re-entry vehicles.”
  • The military parade is also “expected to highlight Beijing’s ambition to enforce claims to Taiwan, the South China Sea and other disputed territories — and to challenge Washington as the region’s dominant force.”
  • China’s People’s Liberation Army, the second largest military in the world “with 2 million men and women in uniform and the second-highest annual spending after the United States, also has been working on fighter planes, the first Chinese-built aircraft carrier and nuclear-powered submarines.”
  • Siemon Wezeman of the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said: “There are quite a lot of observers, including the U.S. military, who say, ‘This is getting close to what we do,’ and they are starting to worry.”
  • According to Ministry of Defense spokesman Maj. Gen. Cai Zhijun, “Tuesday’s parade will include 15,000 troops, more than 160 aircraft and 580 pieces of military equipment.”
  • Cai told reporters this week that “many new weapons will be shown for the first time,” but when he was “asked whether that would include the Dongfeng 41, he said, “‘Please wait and see.’”
  • Experts have noted that “the ability to project power has been seen as increasingly urgent for Chinese leaders aiming to control shipping lanes and waters also claimed by Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines and other governments.”
  • Earlier this year, the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency said: “China has developed nuclear, space, cyberspace and other capabilities that can reach potential adversaries across the globe.”

How About Some Censorship? Biden Campaign Sends Letter Demanding Networks Stop Booking Giuliani Amid Ukraine Controversy

  • 2020 Democratic candidate Joe Biden’s campaign sent a letter on Sunday to the heads of major news networks demanding that they no longer book President Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, to appear on their programs.
  • The letter was “addressed to the heads of the major news and cable networks, as well as top news anchors.”
  • In the letter, “two top Biden campaign advisers make the case that by peddling routine falsehoods about the work of Biden and his son Hunter in Ukraine, Giuliani’s presence on the airwaves is editorially untenable.”
  • The advisers, Anita Dunn and Kate Bedingfield, wrote: “We are writing today with grave concern that you continue to book Rudy Giuliani on your air to spread false, debunked conspiracy theories on behalf of Donald Trump. While you often fact check his statements in real time during your discussions, that is no longer enough.”
  • The letter continued: “By giving him your air time, you are allowing him to introduce increasingly unhinged, unfounded and desperate lies into the national conversation.”
  • “We write to demand that in service to the facts, you no longer book Rudy Giuliani, a surrogate for Donald Trump who has demonstrated that he will knowingly and willingly lie in order to advance his own narrative,” the letter said.
  • The letter also noted that “Giuliani is not a public official, and holds no public office that would entitle him to opine on the nation’s airwaves.”
  • Dunn and Bedingfield also demanded “that if the former mayor is put on the airwaves, an equivalent amount of time be given to a surrogate for the Biden campaign.”
  • In response, Giuliani “said the Biden letter sounds like the usual left wing censorship. Everything I say is supported by such as today, affidavits and statements. They are the ones who have covered up pay for play for at least 5 years.”
  • Trump 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale tweeted, “Can we request the removal of Democrats on TV that push hoaxes? Wait, but then who would do the interviews?”

Pro-Democracy Hong Kong Protests Erupt in Violence For 2nd Day as Protesters, Police Clash Ahead of China’s National Day Holiday

  • For a second consecutive day in Hong Kong, pro-democracy protesters and police clashed ahead of China’s holiday this week, National Day on Oct. 1.
  • Hong Kong’s business and shopping districts have been thrown into disarray over the clashes.
  • The violence on Sunday started “early afternoon when police fired tear gas to disperse a large crowd that had amassed in the popular Causeway Bay shopping district. But thousands of people regrouped and defiantly marched along a main thoroughfare toward government offices, crippling traffic.”
  • As the two sides clashed, “riot police repeatedly fired blue liquid — used to identify protesters — from a water cannon truck and multiple volleys of tear gas after demonstrators hurled Molotov cocktails at officers and targeted the city’s government office complex.”
  • The same scenes had played out on Saturday and are “part of a familiar cycle since pro-democracy protests began in early June. The protests were sparked by a now-shelved extradition bill and have since snowballed into an anti-China movement.”
  • One demonstrator said: “We know that in the face of the world’s largest totalitarian regime — to quote Captain America, ‘Whatever it takes,’” referring to “the violent methods deployed by hard-line protesters.”
  • The protester added: “The consensus right now is that everyone’s methods are valid and we all do our part.”
  • Despite a police ban, protesters plan to take to the streets on Tuesday, “raising fears of more violent confrontations that would embarrass Chinese President Xi Jinping as his ruling Communist Party marks 70 years since taking power.”
  • One Hong Kong resident said: “So many youngsters feel that they’re going to have no future because of the power of China. It’s hopeless for Hong Kong. If we don’t stand up, there will be no hope.”
  • With the ongoing protests, “Hong Kong’s government has already scaled down the city’s National Day celebrations, canceling an annual fireworks display and moving a reception indoors.”

Crackpot, Long-Shot 2020 Republican Challenger Joe Walsh Said Trump’s ‘Giving His Middle Finger to the American People’

  • Former Republican Rep. Joe Walsh, who’s one of three Republicans trying to challenge President Trump in the 2020 presidential election, said on Friday “that it’s time for Republicans to have a gut-check following Democrats’ launch of a formal impeachment inquiry this week.”
  • During a CNN interview with Brianna Keilar, Walsh said: “All Donald Trump cares about is Donald Trump. And this [Trump] phone call, what we learned this week makes it clear.”
  • Walsh also said that Trump is “giving his middle finger to the American people by pushing Ukraine to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a top political rival, noting that interference in U.S. elections by foreign governments has been a major concern following Russia’s meddling in the 2016 presidential election.”
  • Walsh said: “If there’s one issue, Brianna, that has been eating at this country for the last three years, it’s foreign interference in our election. And here’s the president of the United States just a couple months ago on this call — it’s quite literally like he’s giving his middle finger to the American people.”
  • Walsh said of Trump: “‘I don’t care about that. I’m going to ask another government to interfere in our 2020 election. I dare you to come get me.’ He’s giving the country the middle finger and Republicans better understand that.”
  • Also, on Friday, “Walsh came to the defense of the whistleblower as Trump and his GOP allies continued to accuse the whistleblower of acting based on secondhand information.”
  • Walsh added “that all whistleblowers should be praised and revered by Americans.”
  • Walsh is “a former one-term Republican congressman and conservative talk radio host.” Polls continue to show “Trump with broad support within the GOP, with Walsh and two other Republicans who have announced primary campaigns against him in 2020 receiving single-digit support.”
  • In a recent poll put out by Emerson, “Walsh received about 5 percent support” and is considered a long-shot.

The News is Fake, But the Outrage is Real: #CancelNYT Continues to Trend Over Uproar of Paper Trying to Identify Whistleblower

  • Sarah Jeong, a “New York Times” editorial board member, said on Friday that the paper “does pay attention to subscriber cancellations, and they can back up dissenting views inside the paper.”
  • Jeong tweeted: “NYT does pay attention to subscriber cancellations. It’s one of the metrics for ‘outrage’ that they take to distinguish between ‘real’ outrage and superficial outrage. What subscribers say can back up dissenting views inside the paper about what it should do and be.”
  • Jeong continued: “I’ve eschewed children and a mortgage exactly so I can have the freedom to follow my conscience. I will not dissuade anyone else from following their conscience as well.”
  • Some “New York Times subscribers voiced their plans to cancel their subscriptions this week in protest of the newspaper’s attempts to find out the identity of the Trump-Ukraine whistleblower.”
  • NYT went too far to some people “after the newspaper reported that the whistleblower is said to be a CIA officer who was assigned to work at the White House.”
  • Some subscribers even “called on Executive Editor Dean Baquet to resign, and threatened to cancel their subscriptions if he did not.”
  • This outrage “led to the hashtag #CancelNYT trending on Twitter this week.”
  • Bishop Talbert Swan tweeted: “Y’all really doxxed the whistleblower? If anything happens to him/her, it’s on you, #CancelNYT”
  • Fernand R. Amandi tweeted: “Did the @nytimes really just dox the whistleblower who courageously risked life & career to reveal what they learned to the American people? If so, it pains to say it’s time to #CancelNYT & Executive Editor Dean Baquet. A shameful, unforgivable, tarnishing error in judgment.”

Another Hero Lost: Harris County’s 1st Trailblazing Sikh Deputy Died After Being Shot During Traffic Stop

  • Sandeep Dhaliwal, a sheriff’s deputy and 10-year veteran of the Harris County Sherriff’s Office, has died following a traffic stop that took place Friday afternoon. As the county’s first Sikh deputy, Dhaliwal has been described as a “trailblazer.”
  • At 12:45 pm, the deputy “stopped a vehicle with two people inside,” where “one of the occupants was able to leave the vehicle, approach the deputy from behind and shoot him at least twice.”
  • Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez described it as the person “basically just shot him in a very ruthless, cold-blooded way.”
  • The deputy’s “dashboard camera captured video showing Dhaliwal speaking with the driver in what appeared to be a conversational tone.” Sheriff’s Maj. Mike Lee said there was “no combat, no arguing.”
  • According to the video, “the driver’s door was opened at one point, and Dhaliwal shut it as the driver remained in the vehicle.”
  • Lee said “when Dhaliwal turned to walk back to his patrol car, the driver steps from the car almost immediately running with a gun already out. The driver shot the deputy from behind, hitting him in the back of the head. The driver got back in his car and drove away. “
  • According to Lee, a short time later, a deputy “found a nervous man matching the description of the driver in a business at a nearby strip shopping center.”
  • He also noted that “a woman believed to have been a passenger in the car also was taken into custody. Their identities haven’t been released.”
  • Gonzalez tweeted: “I’m sad to share with you that we’ve lost one of our own. There are no words to convey our sadness. Please keep his family and our agency in your prayers.”
  • Dhaliwal was a father of three and “worked with United Sikhs, an international nonprofit, non-governmental, humanitarian relief, human development and advocacy organization affiliated with the United Nations.”

More Climate Change Insanity: Protesters Take Over Streets All Over Canada to Push Phony Agenda; Greta Thunberg Addressed Crowd

  • Across Canada, hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets in protest of climate change and are demanding that lawmakers do more to combat what they consider inadequate policies. Events have been planned in about 100 cities and towns.
  • These Canadian “protesters are taking part in the global climate strike movement, which has seen people around the world take to the streets.”
  • Students initially began conducting school strikes, which “were inspired by Swedish campaigner Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for Future movement.”
  • 16-year-old Thunberg “on Monday chastised world leaders at the United Nations over their failure to do more, spoke in Montreal at the start of strikes in the city, which are expected to draw more than 300,000 people.”
  • Thunberg told reporters: “It is very moving to see everyone, everyone who is so passionate to march and strike. It is a very good day, I would say.”
  • While in Montreal, “Thunberg will receive the key to the city from Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante.”
  • Organizers said “half a million people have gathered in the eastern city of Montreal alone. Officials told local media the number was closer to 315,000.”
  • According to those figures, it would “place the Montreal event among some of the most attended environmental marches in history. The September 2014 People’s Climate March in New York attracted at least 310,000.”
  • Due to the protests, “schools, colleges and universities suspended all or some classes for the day, and the city government and some businesses have encouraged staff to take the day off. City public transit is also free for the event.”
  • Though the “march was mostly peaceful,” one “man was tackled by police and arrested after approaching Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.”

Nigerian Police Rescue 300 Boys, Men Held Against Will, Sexually Abused, Tortured, Starved at Alleged Islamic School

  • Nigerian police confirmed that more than 300 boys and men were “rescued from a building thought to be an Islamic school where they were held against their will, sexually abused, starved and tortured.”
  • Some of the boys rescued from the town of Kaduna were as young as 5 years old.
  • According to reports, “most of the victims seen by a reporter were children, some in their late teens. One boy, holding a police officer’s hand as he wobbled unsteadily, had visible sores on his back, possibly the result of whipping.”
  • Police spokesman Yakubu Sabo said: “The condition under which we found the victims was so dehumanizing, many of them were chained.”
  • Sabo added that “the owner and six others who were said to be teachers have been arrested.”
  • Kaduna Police Chief Ali Janga told media outlets “that police raided the building after a local tip. He described it as a house of torture and a place of slavery.”
  • The building’s owner insisted to “police the children had been brought by their families to learn the Quran or because they had problems such as drug addiction. But police said the place was not licensed to run any reformatory or educational program.”
  • Bell Hamza, a detainee, told Nigerian media: “I have spent three months here with chains on my legs.”
  • Another detainee, Hassan Yusuf, “told Reuters he had been sent to the school because of concerns over his way of life after studying abroad for a few years.”
  • Yusuf said: “They said my lifestyle has changed — I’ve become a Christian, I’ve left the Islamic way of life.”
  • For now, “the rescued children have been moved to a camp at a stadium in Kaduna and the state government is providing for them while police attempt to locate their guardians.”

Irish FM Coveney Argues Time’s Running out for EU, UK to Work Out Divorce Deal; Says ‘Moment of Truth’ Approaching

  • Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said on Friday that “time was running out” for Britain and the EU to work out a divorce deal before Britain exits the bloc. Coveney also noted that “the moment of truth was approaching.”
  • Prime Minister Boris Johnson has continued to promise that “Britain will leave the EU on Oct. 31 whether or not a deal has been agreed with the bloc, and while both sides say they are keen to reach an agreement, there is little sign of the deadlock being broken.”
  • Opponents of Johnson says that “leaving the EU without a deal to keep most of its trading arrangements in place would plunge Britain into economic chaos.”
  • However, the U.K. “government says it has made preparations to avoid serious disruption.”
  • Before Johnson took office, “the EU agreed to a withdrawal package with former Prime Minister Theresa May but this was rejected three times by the British parliament over the “Irish backstop.”
  • This is “an insurance policy to prevent the return of a hard border between the British province of Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic.”
  • While Coveney held a “meeting with EU Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier in Brussels,” he “said negotiations had to be on the basis of a serious proposal from the British on how they would replace the backstop.”
  • Coveney told reporters: “That hasn’t happened yet and until there is a serious proposal in writing … then the gaps that are wide at the moment will remain. And time is running out.”
  • Barnier remarked that “the bloc was firmly united on insisting on a legally operative fix for the Irish border issue, saying it needed to avoid a hard border and protect the integrity of the EU’s single market.”
  • Coveney said: “The onus is on the British prime minister and his team,” and added “that Ireland was open to extending the Brexit departure date.”
  • Coveney added: “An extension is preferable to no deal.”
  • Johnson said: “We will obey the law, but we’re confident we can come out on Oct. 31 and the best way to do that is to get a deal.”
  • Johnson added: “That’s why the surrender act is so damaging. It has had the effect with our European friends making them think: ‘maybe parliament can block this thing, maybe they will be forced to extend.’ If you’re in a negotiation that obviously makes it more difficult.”
